A benthic δC‐based proxy for atmospheric pCO2 over the last 1.5 Myr

چکیده
[1] A high‐resolution marine proxy for atmospheric pCO2 is needed to clarify the phase lag between pCO2 and marine climate proxies and to provide a record of orbital‐scale pCO2 variations before the oldest ice core measurement at 800 ka. Benthic dC data should record deep ocean carbon storage and, thus, atmospheric pCO2. This study finds that a modified dC gradient between the deep Pacific and intermediate North Atlantic (DdCP−NA 2 ) correlates well with pCO2. Dd CP−NA 2 reproduces characteristic differences between pCO2 and ice volume during Late Pleistocene glaciations and indicates that pCO2 usually leads terminations by 0.2–3.7 kyr but lags by 3–10 kyr during two “failed” terminations at 535 and 745 ka.DdCP−NA 2 gradually transitions from 41‐ to 100‐kyr cyclicity from 1.3–0.7 Ma but has no secular trend in mean or amplitude since 1.5 Ma. The minimum pCO2 of the last 1.5 Myr is estimated to be 155 ppm at ∼920 ka. Citation: Lisiecki, L. E. (2010), A benthic dC‐ based proxy for atmospheric pCO2 over the last 1.5 Myr, Geophys. Res. Atlantic overturning responses to obliquity and precession over the last 3 Myr
This study analyzes 39 Atlantic and seven Pacific benthic δC records to characterize obliquity and precession responses in Atlantic overturning since 3 Ma. Regional benthic δC stacks are also analyzed. A major transition in orbital responses is observed at 1.5–1.6 Ma coincident with the first glacial shoaling of Northern Component Water. Since ∼1.5 Ma, the phases of Atlantic benthic δC records ...

متن کاملMulti-proxy reconstruction of surface water pCO2 in the northern Arabian Sea since 29 ka
We report here the results of a multi-proxy study to reconstruct surface water pCO2 concentrations in the northern Arabian Sea. Our results show that δB and Mg/Ca measurements of the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides sacculifer yield consistent pCO2 values with those reconstructed from the δC of alkenones when used in
متن کاملCO2 drawdown following the middle Miocene expansion of the Antarctic Ice Sheet
[1] The development of a permanent, stable ice sheet in East Antarctica happened during the middle Miocene, about 14 million years (Myr) ago. The middle Miocene therefore represents one of the distinct phases of rapid change in the transition from the “greenhouse” of the early Eocene to the “icehouse” of the present day. Carbonate carbon isotope records of the period immediately following the m...
متن کاملResilience of the Asian atmospheric circulation shown by Paleogene dust provenance
The onset of modern central Asian atmospheric circulation is traditionally linked to the interplay of surface uplift of the Mongolian and Tibetan-Himalayan orogens, retreat of the Paratethys sea from central Asia and Cenozoic global cooling. Although the role of these players has not yet been unravelled, the vast dust deposits of central China support the presence of arid conditions and modern ...
